One of my favorite ways to bring warmth into a kitchen is by decorating the walls with framed family recipes—handwritten, well-loved pages. Even showing the spills as the recipe was made by my mother. Grouped in frames, they add instant soul and tell a story no store-bought art ever could.

I love mixing these sentimental pieces with:

  • Coastal-inspired artworks such as this vintage painting of a boat

  • Vintage-style botanical prints

The key is keeping the arrangement relaxed and collected, rather than perfectly symmetrical.

Nothing softens a kitchen quite like greenery. In a cottage kitchen, plants make the space feel alive and gently untamed.

Some of my go-to choices:

  • Potted herbs on the windowsill, in gorgeous terracotta pots

  • Trailing plants on open shelving

  • Small olive or citrus trees in woven baskets

Not only do plants add texture and colour, they reinforce that feeling of slow, grounded living—especially in a kitchen that overlooks nature or the water.  And when the plants are placed close to the sink, you’ll never forget to water them!

3. Coastal Touches: Sea Shells & Natural Finds

CBecause I live by the ocean, I love weaving in subtle coastal elements that feel authentic rather than themed. Collected sea shells on the windowsill, a shell used to hold my scrubber, or a few smooth stones gathered from the beach can add character without overpowering the space.

Think found objects, not décor purchased to look coastal.

I also like to decant my dishwashing liquid and hand soap into pretty dispensers.  And finding this antique brass cleat was a true score.  

4. Favourite Design Details That Make It Feel Like Home

For me, a cozy cottage kitchen is all about texture and softness:

  • Warm-toned cabinetry or painted finishes

  • Natural wood accents—cutting boards, stools, shelving

  • Handmade or zellige-style tile with variation and movement

  • Soft, ambient lighting instead of harsh overheads

  • Colourful tea towels and patterned window coverings

These elements create a kitchen that feels welcoming at all hours of the day.

5. small Appliances That Blend Beauty & Function

A cottage kitchen gives you permission to lean into the quirkiness.  My kettle and toaster actually matches the aqua herringbone backsplash tiles.  

I gravitate toward:

  • Classic silhouettes in fun colours, that can stay out on your counters as a showpiece

  • Panel-ready or integrated appliances where possible such as my dishwasher as it visually expands the space

Choosing appliances that complement the overall aesthetic helps the kitchen feel calm, cohesive, and lived-in.
